The MicroSkin® Barrier

For over 35 years, MicroSkin® has been the power behind every Cymed pouching system. It is a transparent, ultra-thin and waterproof polyurethane film with cutting edge adhesive technology and design. Because the MicroSkin® is completely breathable and lightweight, it feels like your own skin while delivering unmatched comfort, flexibility, and durability.  The simplicity of the components as they come together in both One-Piece and Two-Piece Ostomy systems makes it easy to apply to the skin with minimal accessories and go about your life, without limitations.
Ultra-Thin Comfort

The entire MicroSkin® thickness measures just 1/1000 of an inch, with the ability to stretch up to 500% for unparalleled comfort and performance. The transparent film allows for easy monitoring of the skin underneath so conditions can be easily monitored by the ostomate themself and by healthcare providers.

Durable and Waterproof

Strength that comes from contact quality, not bulk: The broad adhesive surface area improves strength and durability, reducing surface tension to help prevent skin irritation and increase wear time. MicroSkin® is waterproof yet breathable, as it allows moisture to escape while protecting against water penetration.

Skin Safe and Breathable

Latex Free, hypo-allergenic, and breathable: MicroSkin® is designed with gentle, skin safe ingredients free from harmful chemicals that can cause allergic reactions, skin breakdown and irritation. Air and perspiration can pass through from the skin, but fluid and bacteria can not, allowing skin to maintain itself naturally.

Minimizes Cost Long Term

Engineered to conform to contours, scars, folds, and creases, minimizing edge lift and leakage risk, helping to reduce or eliminate the need for additional tapes and excessive skin-prep accessories. With MicroSkin®, you get longer wear, less hassle, and a more cost-effective approach to ostomy care. All Cymed products are covered by Medicare, Medicaid and most private insurers.

The Science Behind Cymed MicroSkin®

Why MVTR Matters in Skin Adhesives?

MVTR (Moisture Vapor Transmission Rate) is critical to skin health and long-term adhesion. When moisture becomes trapped beneath an ostomy barrier, it can quickly lead to maceration, irritation, compromised adhesion, and premature failure. Traditional barriers often rely on thicker hydrocolloids that create a tight seal but limit vapor exchange, trapping perspiration and trans-epidermal moisture, especially during extended wear, activity, or in warm climates. MicroSkin® takes a different approach.

MicroSkin® Is Designed For MVTR Performance

MicroSkin’s ultra-thin, advanced polymer film is engineered to promote breathability and evaporation, allowing moisture vapor to escape while maintaining a secure, uniform seal. This creates a more balanced skin environment with reduced moisture buildup, lower risk of skin breakdown, more consistent adhesion, and improved comfort over time.

By combining high MVTR performance with an ultra-thin design, MicroSkin® supports both skin integrity and reliable wear especially for sensitive skin, high-output stomas, and extended wear needs.

Hydrophobicity Makes MicroSkin® Waterproof

MicroSkin® exhibits intrinsic waterproof properties due to its low surface energy and limited wettability profile, consistent with hydrophobic material behavior. This results in a surface that promotes water beading and runoff rather than absorption or permeation.
In MicroSkin® MicroDerm™ pouching systems, the hydrocolloid component is positioned between the skin and the MicroSkin® barrier film. Because hydrocolloids are inherently hydrophilic and susceptible to moisture degradation, this configuration ensures they are fully shielded from external liquid exposure. The MicroSkin® layer functions as a continuous protective barrier of any hydrocolloid and the peristomal skin, preventing contact with water from activities such as showering, bathing, or swimming, thereby preserving seal integrity and extending wear performance.

The MicroDerm™ Washer

The MicroDerm™ Washer Offers a Gentle Solution

Cymed’s MicroDerm™ Washers are designed to enhance barrier performance when additional protection is needed. While the “plain” MicroSkin® barrier provides exceptional performance for many ostomy needs, individuals with ileostomies or higher-volume, liquid output may benefit from added support at the stoma site. Made from a high-density, citrus pectin-based hydrocolloid, MicroDerm™ is also suitable for those with sensitivities to other hydrocolloids. The MicroDerm™ Washer is a one sided adhesive therefore it sticks to the barrier, not to your skin. It absorbs excess moisture while maintaining a secure, consistent seal, helping manage effluent more effectively. Its design creates a gentle “turtlenecking” effect that improves conformity around the stoma to help reduce leakage, while also providing light convexity to support flush or recessed stomas, without the need for more rigid convex systems.
MicroDerm™ Washers are available in thin and thick profiles, as well as multiple sizes to meet individual needs. They can be integrated into MicroSkin® pouching systems or used separately to customize fit and performance for specific wear conditions.

The Original Ile-Sorb™

Long before modern ostomy accessories offered the convenience and confidence people expect today, living with an ileostomy or colostomy with loose stomal output came with a unique set of daily challenges. Patients would struggle with sloshing, leaking, noise, and difficulties draining which could reduce confidence and wear time of their valuable ostomy supplies. By the 1990’s, Cymed saw the need for a simple solution to managing the liquid in the pouch and turned to science. After much research and testing, yet another novel product was born: The Original Ile-Sorb™.

Trusted For 30 Years

Today, in-pouch gelling products are widely recognized as an essential part of ostomy management. But Ile-Sorb™ stands as an early pioneer. Born from real patient needs, shaped by clinical insight, and guided by a simple belief: The best solutions don’t add more. They quietly solve what matters most.
